alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing many of the same
basic styling ques and engineering details.
This Mercedes 190 SL has been in the possession of the same owner since the
early 1980’s and has resided in Florida for the past few years. It benefits from an
older rotisserie restoration which was performed over 30 years ago. The paint
work has held up well over the years, and the present overall clean condition is a
testament to the how solid the body and chassis was and is. All the body lines are
straight and smooth, and the shut lines are consistent with production quality.
The car is finished in Mercedes Blue (paint code DB-335) and there are no signs of
paint blistering or rust bubbling through. The only imperfections in the paint are a
couple of minor dings and some checking from age.
The corresponding blue interior is very tidy and correct looking right down to the
original ivory steering wheel. The cabin floors are lined with factory-correct
German square weave materials and patterns. All the gauges and switch gear
work as intended, including the optional Becker radio and VDO clock. The
odometer reads just over 83,000 miles, believed to be accurate. The leather seats
are thick and plush; the door panels are in order and the leather pad conforms to
the dash contours neatly. The Hartz cloth convertible top is fitted tightly and the
rear window panel is clear. It has new weather seals throughout, and there’s a
matching blue boot for the top in the lowered position. The removable hardtop is
currently painted to match the exterior color of the car, although the original
color was White Grey (DB158). The only other flaw is the cloth material used for
the inside headliner.
The exterior stainless trim is shiny and ding-free, the chrome bumpers and grill
are plated with show quality chrome. By comparison, the interior chrome pot
metal trim shows signs of some minor pitting. However, with a little steel wool
and some elbow grease, it would shine up nice. Overall the car has aged gracefully
and has a modest amount of patina and character.
Under the hood the engine bay is orderly and looks correct. The Roadster is
powered by a 120 hp 1.9 litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a 4spd manual
transmission. It was rebuilt years ago and has been driven very few miles since
then. The factory twin Solex carburetors have been replaced with high

performance Weber conversions and the engine starts and runs effortlessly.

This car runs and drives as a period 1962 car would drive, nice but, old and quirky
and requires to be driven with finesse, however that is the beauty and the allure
of vintage cars. These are time machines, transporting the occupants to a by-gone
era. They are meant to be driven as casual cruisers or out for an occasional
spirited sprint. Some 25,000 190 SL’s were built during its 8-year production run
of which 18,000 landed on U.S. shores. The estimate is that less than half have
survived worldwide, thus making these 190 SLs rare and desirable. An inspection
of all the VIN and data plates reveals that the stampings on the interior door jam,
cowl tags and frame rail are in the correct location and have proper matching
identification numbers. The engine tags and stampings appear to be in the range
of sequence numbers consistent with the production timeline of this car. The
body is solid and original as well as the undercarriage and trunk. The spare tire is
dated 1957, and along with the jack, is affixed to the proper trunk mount. It is
very elegant and is fully functional and although it may not be a Concours quality
car, it is one that is exceptional enough that with some cosmetic refreshing,
detailing and love, it would be presentable on any show field. It is a great driver
and would bring hours of smiles and enjoyment while touring through the
countryside. This is a delightful German classic roadster.
